NOFAS Colorado is the Colorado affiliate of the National Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

NOFAS Colorado's mission is to provide a forum for collaboration of agencies and families and a unified voice for prenatal alcohol and drug exposure education, prevention, identification and intervention.

The term "FASD", or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders includes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and other conditions caused by prenatal alcohol exposure.

FAS refers to the full syndrome including a characteristic pattern of facial abnormalities, growth deficiency, brain damage and maternal alcohol use.  FAS is the number one cause of preventable mental retardation in the United States.

It is estimated that 40,000 children are born with FASD in the United States each year.  Without identification and care, 80% of them will be unable to live independently or hold down a job.  Many will end up in jail.

Those who have higher IQ's and do not have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome but have other kinds of FASDs often have the worst outcomes due to less recognition and treatment of the problem.

The estimated lifetime cost to society of each individual with an FASD is $2 million plus.  Early identification, diagnosis and intervention can help these individuals become productive citizens instead.

We invite anyone involved with FASD, parents, professionals and those affected to join NOFAS Colorado, take part in our facebook page, or contact us for information and support.
